Lecture by Dr. Brian Rush, Center for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH), Toronto. Event: Addiction, spirituality and quest for meaning, Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières. Used in traditional Amazonian medicine, ayahuasca is attracting increasing interest from researchers, particularly for its therapeutic potential in the treatment of addiction and other mental health disorders. The existing gap between needs and treatment resources in many countries, the increasing use of ayahuasca in religious and therapeutic contexts, and the strength of the available scientific data, are leading to a better understanding of the contribution of ayahuasca. This conference will present research on the therapeutic use of ayahuasca from the perspective of traditional and alternative medicine, in addition to addressing the renaissance of therapeutic interest for substances such as psilocybin, ecstasy, etc. The advantages and disadvantages associated with certain scientific paradigms used in the study on the roles of these substances in treatment will also be discussed. Finally, the international and multisite research ATOP (Ayahuasca Treatment Outcome Project) on the therapeutic efficacy of ayahuasca will be described. More information: ATOP.
