Subtle Bodies and Cultural Syndromes. A Conversation with Dr. Jacques Mabit

In this interview, Matteo Politi, head of Takiwasi’s Research Department, speaks with Dr. Jacques Mabit, founder and president of Takiwasi, about conceptions of the human body and health in traditional medicines and their possible dialogue with Western medicine.

Drawing on more than four decades of clinical experience in Peru, Jacques Mabit discusses so-called subtle bodies, cultural syndromes, and the different dimensions — physical, electromagnetic, emotional, psychological, energetic, and spiritual — that, from his perspective, may play a role in processes of health and illness.

Attend the IV Dialogue Between Medicines Conference Online

Registration is open to participate online in the IV Dialogue Between Medicines Conference “Spiritual Illnesses, Traditional Medicines and Christianity”, organized by the GASS Association and Takiwasi Center.

The event will take place on Saturday, October 17 in Barcelona, Spain, starting at 9:00 a.m., with the option to participate either in person or online.

Testimonial about Addiction Treatment

In this testimony, Renato shares his experience of nine months of residential treatment at Takiwasi and speaks about some of the aspects that were fundamental to his process: the support of the therapeutic team, community life, medicinal plants, and above all, the daily structure, workshops, and responsibilities he took on during his stay.

One of the aspects he highlights most is the importance of not feeling reduced to a psychiatric label or diagnosis, as happened to him in previous experiences in other clinical settings. Instead, at Takiwasi, he was able to recognize his difficulties, take responsibility for them, and work on them. The process allowed him to explore aspects of his personal history, learn to express his feelings, relate to others in a different way, and develop greater autonomy and a stronger capacity to cope with difficult situations.

Healing to Educate

Last year, we welcomed a group of 20 young education students from three Indigenous peoples of the Ecuadorian Amazon — Ai’ Kofán, Siekopaai, and Waorani — to participate in a therapeutic seminar as part of the Educación Propia program promoted by Amazon Frontlines and Alianza Ceibo.

The program aims to recover ancestral memory and thereby contribute to preserving cultural identity for future generations. This is the diary of their experience.

Revista Takiwasi Available in Open Access

The "Revista Takiwasi: usos y abusos de sustancias psicoactivas y estados de conciencia" (Takiwasi Journal: Uses and Abuses of Psychoactive Substances and States of Consciousness) was published in five issues between 1992 and 1997. This editorial adventure left us with fond memories of stimulating exchanges and fruitful encounters.

Now that Takiwasi is embarking on a new chapter with the launch of its own publishing house, we have decided to give all our friends free access to every article published in the Revista Takiwasi.

Although these texts were published several years ago, they remain remarkably relevant today, demonstrating Takiwasi’s forward-looking vision and pioneering approach.

New Testimonial About the Retreat/Diet

After 30 years working as a paramedic firefighter in the United States, Dan came to Takiwasi for the first time seeking a path to healing through medicinal plants.

Through the Retreat/Diet, he was able to reconnect with a deep and clear sense of his life purpose and his vocation as a first responder.

Editorial Takiwasi

Editorial Takiwasi was created with the purpose of preserving, publishing, and disseminating knowledge, experiences, and research related to traditional Amazonian medicines, mental health, spirituality, and dialogue between different forms of knowledge that often struggle to find an appropriate place in the conventional publishing world.

This new project is already taking shape with the publication of several works, including Canta la Ayahuasca: Ikaros y enseñanzas de las plantas medicinales amazónicas, by Dr. Rosa Giove, available in both digital and print formats. This book brings together the transcription of 61 ikaros and constitutes a valuable record of her research, as well as a legacy for the preservation and transmission of traditional Amazonian medicine knowledge.

Other titles include Ayahuasca: Revelaciones de lo Sagrado, by psychologist Víctor Lucia Sánchez, who proposes a dialogue between biblical symbolism and the master plants of the Amazon, and El discernimiento de los espíritus: evolución y cuestiones terapéuticas, by Thibault Luycx, therapist at Takiwasi, who explores the discernment of spirits and its implications for therapeutic processes from a historical, theological, and anthropological perspective.

Stop Unlimited Noise in Tarapoto

In Tarapoto, nighttime noise has become a public health issue. Music at nightclub-level volumes until the early hours of the morning, engine noise, loudspeakers in the streets, and uncontrolled parties at any time of day or night have become increasingly common.

Takiwasi is joining the campaign to call on the authorities to enforce the existing legal limits and time restrictions on noise. People who do not live in Tarapoto can also sign this petition.
