Recognition for the 30 years of the Takiwasi Center

On September 8, the Takiwasi Center celebrated its 30th anniversary. Considering the importance of this anniversary, the Congress of the Republic of Peru has awarded Takiwasi an official recognition for the valuable actions carried out in favor of the wellbeing and mental health of the population, the rescue and valorization of traditional medicine and the contribution to the development and progress of the San Martín region.

The delivery of the recognition has been made personally by the Congresswoman of the Republic Cheryl Trigozo Reátegui to the founding president of Takiwasi, Dr. Jacques Mabit, in the framework of a ceremony held in the auditorium of the Takiwasi Center in which several authorities of the city of Tarapoto also participated.

The event was also the opportunity for the Chamber of Commerce of San Martín to present a recognition to the Takiwasi Center for its outstanding trajectory in favor of the research and development of natural products based on the ancestral knowledge of traditional Amazonian medicine in the San Martin region. Likewise, the Association of Therapeutic Communities of Peru gave us a certificate of recognition for the “Contribution of Takiwasi to the rehabilitation and social reintegration of people addicted to drugs".

These recognitions are added to the diploma of merit and civic medal of the city of Tarapoto delivered to Takiwasi by the mayor of the Provincial Municipality of San Martín, Henry Maldonado Flores, on August 19 in the framework of the celebrations for the anniversary of the city of Tarapoto. In this event, a posthumous tribute to merit was also paid to Dr. Rosa Giove, co-founder of the Takiwasi Center, for her outstanding work in defending, preserving and integrating traditional Amazonian medicine into the public health system.

Takiwasi - 30 years of healing

On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the Takiwasi Center, we propose this documentary that offers a retrospective of these three decades of intense clinical work and research on traditional Amazonian medicines that have allowed the institution to become a national and international reference.

From the initial objectives and the vocation of service, to the excellent clinical results recorded in the most recent scientific studies, the film presents the various facets of Takiwasi: the therapeutic community for the treatment of drug addiction, the offer of personal development retreats, the combination of Western and Amazonian medical resources, the construction of gateways between representatives of different cultures, spiritualities and knowledge, the development of natural products based on medicinal plants and the projects developed in collaboration with local indigenous communities. Subtitles available in English.

To Takiwasi

Takiwasi is a large baked bread, it is the sound of the jungle at dusk, it is Jacques and Jaime, it is Rosa and Lupe. Takiwasi is the Saturday newspaper on Sundays, it's the MP3 on the weekend, the mangoes on the ground and the flowers in the cave. Takiwasi is the doorbell of the house and Mrs. Meche telling you to come in. Takiwasi is the smell of agua florida and tobacco, it is the freshly washed buckets and Elbis carrying the world on his back, it is the firewood for the rituals and the night on the last day of the dieta. Takiwasi is Danae, Edgardo, Mrs. Sylvia, Don Gary, Jesús and Gaby, it is José and Josué, Uriel, Carlos, Hermitaño, Segundo and Luis, Hermógenes and Bruno. Takiwasi is the smell of perfumes and the river, it is the nettle and Jose Vela, Mrs. Aracelli, Veronika and Fabienne, Don Wilson and Homero, Fernando, Don Martín, David and Percy, it is the carpentry to talk at night before starting week. Takiwasi are the companions and their stories, white clothes and Marsella soap. Takiwasi are the nights in the middle of the court imagining what life will be like, it is the dreams and visions, it is the lunar eclipse that we saw and the dieters who marked the time like a friendly clock. Takiwasi is the Ajo Sacha and the Rosa Sisa. And now, Takiwasi is also Cusco and its streets, it is the Sacred Valley and my family. Takiwasi is the laughter of my son and the shoulder of my partner, it is the "Ábrete Corazón" as a lullaby, cloth diapers and sleepless nights. It's my dogs and my cats, it's the garden and the river that passes by. Takiwasi are the mountains that surround me, the communities that I visit, the lagoons, the bridges and the return home. Takiwasi are my friends, my clients and the saleswomen of the market. Takiwasi has that ability to fill everything with reality and magic. Takiwasi is the place where I decided to live again and it is the house I return to.

We share this moving dedication to Takiwasi published by Miguel Palomino on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of our institution. Miguel is also the author of the picture that accompanies this beautiful text.

Canta la Ayahuasca - Healing Ikaros

Ikaros are essential elements of Traditional Amazonian Medicine and constitute a source of cultural resistance by preserving both linguistic elements and knowledge related to Amazonian world-view and medicinal resources, which go back in time to the original cultures. They are the essential means to transmit wisdom and healing practices. This concept led us to call our center "Takiwasi" that in Quechua means "the house that sings" or "the house of song", to honor this tradition.

On our website we offer for sale the ikaros sung by the healers of Takiwasi which include a new production recorded live during an ayahuasca ceremony held at the Takiwasi Center a few months ago, with also an ikaro traditionally sung during plant baths!

The revenues generated from the sale of these products is entirely destined to support Takiwasi in the treatment and rehabilitation of people with limited economic resources who suffer from drug addiction.
