Master Plants: Chiric Sanango

In our upcoming webinar, we will be speaking with biochemist Laura Monteagudo about the findings of a recent academic publication based on research conducted at Takiwasi on Chiric Sanango (Brunfelsia grandiflora), a master plant used in the context of retreat-diets.

This plant is associated with the elimination of “internal cold,” linked to deep fears, emotional blockages, and difficulties in moving forward in life. Chiric Sanango does not offer quick solutions. Its action is often intense and challenging, both physically and psychologically, and requires guidance, discipline, and care after the diet. Precisely for this reason, the process can help strengthen body awareness, learn to tolerate discomfort, regulate impulses, and restore trust in social bonds, key aspects in the path of addiction recovery.

We look forward to seeing you on Tuesday, February 17 at 11:00 a.m. (Peru time) on our live Facebook broadcast.

Traditional Knowledge and Therapeutic Application of Chiric Sanango

A new study conducted by our research team has been published in English in the Journal of Psychoactive Drugs: “Traditional Knowledge and Therapeutic Application of Chiric Sanango (Brunfelsia grandiflora) in an Amazonian Rehabilitation Center”.

Abstract
The use of traditional medicinal plants in therapeutic settings has gained increasing attention for their potential in mental health and addiction treatment. This study explores the ethnomedical use of Brunfelsia grandiflora (chiric sanango) within the therapeutic framework of the Takiwasi Center in the Peruvian Amazon, where it is integrated into strict plant-based dietary regimens (“dietas”) to support addiction recovery and psychological well-being.

The research combines data from semi-structured interviews with therapists, traditional healers, and other staff members, along with patient-reported experience data from the institution’s database. A total of 74 case reports were analyzed to assess both the physiological and psychological effects of chiric sanango.

Findings indicate that the plant induces notable physical effects, including numbness, tingling, dizziness, and cold sensations, while also facilitating deep psychological introspection, emotional processing, and enhanced social engagement. Participants frequently reported shifts from distressing emotions to states of clarity, acceptance, and resilience.

These effects suggest that chiric sanango may serve as an important adjunct in psychotherapy and addiction treatment. This study highlights the intersection of Amazonian ethnomedicine and modern therapeutic practices, emphasizing the need for further pharmacological and clinical investigations into the psychoactive properties of chiric sanango and its potential role in mental health interventions.

New testimonial from a participant in the Retreat / Diet

"I took part in the September 2025 diet. For a very long time, I searched to understand the reason for the sense of unease that overwhelmed and affected me. Thanks to the plants, the retreat in the Amazon rainforest, the kindness, professionalism, attentive listening (special thanks to Fabienne), and the safe environment provided by the Takiwasi team, I was finally able to find answers. This diet allowed me to heal deeply buried wounds and to move forward calmly in my professional and personal life."

Seminar for Women with Addiction Problems

In response to the numerous requests received from women interested in accessing a specialized therapeutic process, we are pleased to announce the Second Edition of the Seminar for Women with Addiction Problems, which will take place at Takiwasi in November 2026.

We propose a therapeutic process for women facing addiction/dependence issues, including ritualized use of the so-called “master plants” of the Peruvian Amazonian tradition. These practices aim to facilitate the release of emotional blockages, the renewal of vital energy, and the awakening of spiritual forces. This exploratory work is carried out within a therapeutic setting, with medical and psychotherapeutic support, in a controlled and safe environment.

It is required that participants speak Spanish or French.
