Thank you very much for your help!
Dear friends,
We would like to express our deepest gratitude to all those who have joined the campaign for the reconstruction of Takiwasi’s maloca whether through a donation or by spreading our call for help.
Thanks to the generosity of more than 150 donors, we have reached our goal and will soon be able to bring life back to this space, so important in the therapeutic process of so many people who come to us from all over the world.
Every contribution, regardless of its size, represents an act of trust and commitment to our mission. Your support inspires and motivates us to continue forward with renewed strength and gratitude.
We've already started the reconstruction of the maloca (see pictures) and we promise to keep you informed about the progress, so that you can see the fruits of your solidarity.
Thank you very much,
The Takiwasi Team

Retreat for Veterans & First Responders
In early June, we carried out the first retreat designed exclusively for Veterans and First Responders, with individual and group therapy sessions tailored to their specific needs.
Veterans and First Responders face unique challenges, from PTSD and grief to insomnia and traumatic brain injury, often leading to family tensions, social isolation, and even suicidal tendencies.
The next retreat of this kind will take place from August 3 to 17. The application process is now open and available through our website to participants speaking English, French and Spanish.
Help us share this information with Veterans and First Responders in your family or social circle who may be interested in joining us for a transformative journey.

Experiential Seminar for Indigenous Students
Between late April and early May, a group of young Indigenous people from the Waorani, Kofan, and Siekopai nations of the Ecuadorian Amazon participated in an experiential seminar at Takiwasi to reconnect with their identity, ancestral medicine, and cultural roots.
Through plants intake, therapeutic workshops, and moments of deep introspection, these young people began a process of personal healing that strengthened them and gave them new tools to face the challenges their communities face, such as alcoholism, suicide, and the loss of cultural identity.
Most of the participants are students in training to become teachers and were accompanied by a technical team. This valuable experience was made possible thanks to the support of the Amazon Frontlines foundation and the Ceibo Alliance organization.
One of the most significant aspects of this gathering is the commitment to ongoing follow-up and the willingness to continue this type of initiative, strengthening the alliance between the institutions involved. The goal is for communities to recover and reclaim their traditional healing practices, replicating these experiences in their places of origin.
We share a video summary of the experience (in Spanish), which includes reflections from the therapeutic team and the participants.

Community-led Education and Reconnection with Spiritual Roots in Indigenous Communities
Interview in Spanish with Patricia Peñaherrera, coordinator of the Education Program of Amazon Frontlines, during the experiential seminar for young Indigenous students from the Waorani, Kofan, and Siekopai nations of the Ecuadorian Amazon. This seminar was designed at the Takiwasi Center to help them reconnect with their roots, strengthen their cultural identity, and build strong bridges with the Western world.
Patricia shares her experience of more than 25 years working with Indigenous communities in the Ecuadorian Amazon. From her teaching work to the revitalization of community-led education and ancestral spirituality, Patricia speaks to us about the impact of colonization, the loss of identity, and the urgent need for collective and individual healing.

Botanical Identification of Medicinal Plants: Scientific Method vs. Traditional Perspective
Our research team's new free talk in Spanish will be broadcast on our Facebook Live on Thursday, June 26th.
The Peruvian Amazon is characterized by a high diversity of flora and a wealth of medicinal plant species: some records speak of more than 1,400 medicinal species, many of which play a vital role in traditional Peruvian medicine for the prevention and treatment of various diseases.
Traditional knowledge is also the source for academic research on the active ingredients and phytochemistry of medicinal plants; however, many of these species have not yet been identified according to scientific standards and are better known by their popular or common names.
This webinar, featuring Edilberto Chuquilin, Head of the Botanical Garden at the National Agrarian University of La Selva (Tingo Maria, Peru), offers a practical introduction to the botanical identification of medicinal plants, addressing both the scientific approach (taxonomy, nomenclature, ecology) and traditional knowledge based on vernacular names and cultural use.
For those unable to attend, we are sharing the video of last month's research talk: "Dangers of the Loss of Traditional Knowledge about Medicinal Plants", published on our YouTube channel.

The power of the eagle: an Awajún worldview
We are accustomed to thinking that ethnographic research should be carried out by people who approach a culture different from their own. However, this work represents a significant exception: it is an ethnography told from within, narrated by those who live and experience this culture in their daily lives.
This book in Spanish was born from the initiative of Italian researcher Alberto Dubbini, who had the idea of conducting an interview with Robert Ampam Tsamain, one of the most renowned custodians of traditional knowledge of the Awajún people. Alberto entrusted the task to two young people from the native community of Yutupis. 100% of the proceeds from the sale of this book (which costs a symbolic $10 dollars) will be used to cover the food costs of the children of the NGO CIANAH (Indigenous Support Center for Abandoned and Orphaned Children).

There is also a book in English entitled "New Applications of Amazonian Indigenous Practices for Drug Addiction Treatment and Mental Health" which is a compilation of material produced by the Takiwasi Center and its founder, Dr. Jacques Mabit, during his years of research.
