Participation in the International Congress of Traditional Medicines OHTM

Dr. Jacques Mabit participated in the 1st International Congress of Traditional Medicines “One Health and Traditional Medicine (OHTM)”, held from October 18 to 20, 2023 at Cheikh Anta-Diop University, Dakar, Senegal, with the opening conference of the event, titled “Some conceptual obstacles in the dialogue between traditional medicines and Western medicine”, Wednesday, October 18, 9:30am. Here you can download the complete program of the event (in French).

Abstract of the lecture. As a doctor on the one hand and a traditional practitioner of Amazonian medicine for 36 years on the other, I propose to address the "breaking points" between the practices and the Western vision of care and those of traditional Amazonian medicine which, moreover, are quite general to traditional medicines around the world. Starting from clinical practice, where are these practices encountering conceptual stumbling blocks that differentiate them in fundamental ways? We will focus our attention in particular on the extracts versus the totality of plants, the concept of the single body versus multiple bodies, the spirits or beings of nature, and finally the reality or ontological existence of spirits.

Takiwasi's staff participates in conferences and congresses

In the month of October our therapeutic and research team has participated in different international conferences and events that have taken place in Peru.

The psychologists Tito Flores and Uriel Legaria have participated in the I International Symposium on Mental Health and Interculturality, organized by the College of Psychologists of Puno, from October 9 to 12. The topics of their presentations have been focused respectively on "Integration of traditional Amazonian medicine and psychotherapy in the approach to drug addict patients at the Takiwasi Center", and "The training of the psychologist under an intercultural and transdisciplinary methodological proposal".

Laura Monteagudo, research assistant in natural products and head of the quality control area at Takiwasi Laboratory, presented the lecture “Diet as a therapeutic route: a study on the ethnic roots and biotrade practices of plants used for diet at the Takiwasi Center”, during the annual Congress of the Italo-Latin American Society of Ethnomedicine – SILAE, October 16-20, 2023, Lima, Peru.

Visit of the Vermont Foundation – Support for indigenous students

During the month of September we received a visit from Mr. Bertrand Vermont, who, together with his wife, directs the foundation that finances the higher education of a group of young indigenous people from the Awajún and Wampis ethnic groups from the Santiago River basin. The project, started in 2019 with the first 3 students, currently provides a scholarship to 9 young people who study at different universities and institutes located in the cities of Tarapoto, Lima and Iquitos. They study careers such as psychology, fine arts, law, nursing and education.

Takiwasi Center Online Courses

We want to invite you to enroll in our online courses:

- Introducción al modelo terapéutico Takiwasi: 11 pre-registered classes taught in Spanish by the therapeutic team of the Takiwasi Center. Topics such as Traditional Amazonian Medicine are addressed, including the presentation of specific techniques such as plant baths and purges, and the application of Western psychological approaches in the treatment of addictions, such as existential psychotherapies and the analysis of trans-generational inheritances.

- Coherencias entre la iniciación cristiana y la iniciación amazónica: taught in Spanish by Dr. Jacques Mabit, course based on 5 pre-registered videos. The experience of the Takiwasi Center shows us that there are numerous and surprising points of coherence and convergence between the Christian faith and Amazonian shamanism (when correctly understood and practiced). This course attempts to highlight the relevance of bringing these two paths of knowledge closer together and articulating them appropriately in favor of opening new paths for the healing of the body, mind and spirit.
