Celebrating 33 Years of Commitment and Service!
Takiwasi was founded in 1992 with the purpose of building a bridge between Amazonian traditional medicine and modern science, offering a unique alternative in the treatment of addictions and in the pursuit of holistic well-being.
Over these 33 years, we have accompanied thousands of people in profound healing processes, contributed to the protection and appreciation of the medicinal plants of the Amazon, and promoted an intercultural dialogue that inspires researchers and therapists around the world.
On September 8 we celebrated our 33rd anniversary, and we also want to acknowledge all those who have been part of this history: patients, staff, master healers, native communities, therapists, researchers, volunteers, and friends who believe in this mission.
Thank you for walking this path with us!

Enriching Psychotherapy with Amazonian Traditional Medicine
On Tuesday, October 14, at 11:00 a.m., our therapeutic coordinator Veronika Kavenská will have a live conversation with our research manager Matteo Politi about the benefits and advantages of integrating Amazonian traditional medicine into psychotherapeutic work.
Takiwasi’s 33 years of experience show that Amazonian traditional medicine can significantly enrich psychotherapeutic work, both in healing processes and in personal development, as long as it is applied in the right context and in the proper way. The use of medicinal plants, together with other healing techniques, makes it possible to address issues and challenges with greater depth and to integrate the bodily and energetic-spiritual dimensions that conventional psychotherapy can hardly reach. In this way, healing acquires a more integral, complex, and lasting character.

Master Plants Retreat Testimonial - Former Captain US Army
What does it mean for a soldier to surrender and retreat? In the military, these two words are unthinkable. Yet Trevor, a former infantry officer and U.S. Army captain, discovered at Takiwasi a place where “surrender” and “retreat” take on a deeply healing meaning. In this testimonial, he shares his first experience at Takiwasi where he underwent a master plant dieta in the jungle, guided by our therapeutic team with decades of expertise. A sincere and transformative testimony about the transition from military life to the path of self-knowledge, and how Takiwasi offers a unique opportunity for silence, introspection, and truly meeting yourself.

The Mother-Child Bond in the Development and Overcoming of Addiction
We share the video of the webinar led in Spanish by María Virginia Erazo, Gestalt psychotherapist of Takiwasi, which addresses the fundamental role of the maternal bond in the development and overcoming of this drug addiction. During the talk, examples drawn from clinical experience are shared, allowing for a more concrete understanding of how maternal dynamics create processes of dependence and codependence.
This event left us with this profound and meaningful reflection from a former patient:
“Working through the process with my mother was like being born again and discovering who I really am. At the beginning, I felt a lot of guilt and fear. I truly didn’t believe I was capable of doing anything on my own. Without realizing it, I turned to her for everything. I had no autonomy, no confidence, and no clarity in my life. Understanding that my addiction to drugs was directly related to my bond (or addiction) to my mother was something very difficult for me to grasp. But over time, with the help of the plants and therapy, I was able to see that I am capable of doing everything I set my mind to. Developing my autonomy, becoming financially independent, and being able to fully embrace my partner are things I never would have achieved if I hadn’t completely let go of my mother.
Today I consider that one of the most important parts of my treatment was having worked through this issue with my mother: not judging her, understanding that she is a human being, that she has her own history, and that in the end she simply does the best she can. Letting go of my mother meant taking ownership of my life, opening myself to the world, and —without exaggeration— being truly born. It was hard, but it was worth it, and if I hadn’t worked on this issue, I wouldn’t be the man I am today. To this day, my mother still tries to give me things, but it’s not her fault; it is now my responsibility to set boundaries. Saying no to her and YES to my life is the very essence of my recovery at Takiwasi.”

We Have Completed the Reconstruction of the Maloca!
Dear friends,
We are very happy to announce that, after a few months of hard work, at the beginning of September we completed the reconstruction of our patients’ maloca, which had been destroyed by the fall of a tree last April.
To celebrate this milestone, we held a small inauguration and blessing ceremony for this therapeutic space, so important for Takiwasi, where we will continue to welcome more people in search of healing.
We are deeply grateful to everyone who supported us in this process of renewal!

Takiwasi Center Online Courses
We want to invite you to enroll in our online courses:
- Introducción al modelo terapéutico Takiwasi:
11 pre-registered classes taught in Spanish by the therapeutic team of the Takiwasi Center. Topics such as Traditional Amazonian Medicine are addressed, including the presentation of specific techniques such as plant baths and purges, and the application of Western psychological approaches in the treatment of addictions, such as existential psychotherapies and the analysis of trans-generational inheritances.
-
Coherencias entre la iniciación cristiana y la iniciación amazónica: taught in Spanish by Dr. Jacques Mabit, course based on 5 pre-registered videos. The experience of the Takiwasi Center shows us that there are numerous and surprising points of coherence and convergence between the Christian faith and Amazonian shamanism (when correctly understood and practiced). This course attempts to highlight the relevance of bringing these two paths of knowledge closer together and articulating them appropriately in favor of opening new paths for the healing of the body, mind and spirit.
