Presentation

The WHO (World Health Organization) defines health as a state of wellbeing that includes every sphere of human life, and the organization promotes health policies that include the valuable contributions made by ancestral traditional medicines (MT).

So far, little has been done to respond to the recommendations of the WHO in the area of Mental Health. Therefore, various members (fellows) of the International ASHOKA Foundation who work in the field of American Traditional Medicine (TM) and more specifically in the treatment of addictions believe that it is necessary to demonstrate and promote the valuable contribution of TM in providing solutions to the pressing and growing contemporary problems in mental health.

For these reasons we have decided to organize this meeting between TM practitioners, indigenous representatives, participants in projects that integrate TM with conventional medicine, academics, government representatives and international organizations.

The conference will take place in the city of Tarapoto, Province of St. Martin, in the Peruvian Upper Amazon from 7 to 10 June 2009.

We hope that this conference will help to give visibility to the resource potential of traditional medicines in the field of mental health and especially in the treatment of addictions. We want to open this space to discuss, develop and share ideas on this subject and its applications, giving encouraging experiences in the field but usually ignored.
